Peña (4♥) is tucked away in a lane off Gibson Street near the University of Glasgow.

They do a fine coffee - espresso and aeropress - using changing guest beans and certainly know their craft, wielding their La Marzocco and Mahlkönig EK43 grinder with skill.

Peña has a carefully curated quirkiness, evident from the moment you turn into the cobbled lane. The building itself goes along way toward genuinely setting the tone as it's like nothing else around it.

You'll find yourself lured toward Peña, partly out of sheer curiosity and partly due to the optimistic tables and chairs spilling out on to the lane. The 'HOLA' on the front door, welcoming you in clinches it.

Once through the door you'll need to make an immediate decision about where to sit, either downstairs near the servery or upstairs where there are additional tables and booths. To place your order, wander down to the servery and barista station.

The two major interior design features are high sheen chip board cladding on the majority of the walls and the colour yellow - softened with quirky ornamentation and artistry of the hanging, painted or lighting variety.

On the food front you can choose from tasty breakfasts on sourdough toast with a mix of ingredients including smoked salmon, soft boiled egg, hummus, pesto, parma ham, smashed feta and sumac, among others, alongside toasties and soups. Being near the Uni and many a skint student, pricing is at the budget end for a good size meal.

A very sociable and chilled out spot.
